Efforts to expand the nucleus of friends in the Wesley neighbourhood
Wesley is a small pocket in Mt Roskill, Auckland. Last year a group of boys moved in just outside of the neighbourhood to serve the children's class and junior youth spiritual empowerment programme. Although there were many challenges in the beginning, one strength of the neighbourhood was very clear, the willingness of the local friends to support in any way—whether with transport, organising and bringing food or financial assistance. From the past few meetings, the team's membership has strengthened and the vision has become clearer regarding the need to expand the nucleus of friends. Some developments include a few young friends advancing through the sequence of courses and arising to serve as children's class teachers, as well as one serving as a tutor.
Another breakthrough in Wesley has been having three additional youth move into a pioneer home situated in the heart of the Wesley neighbourhood. As this is a very recent occurrence, they are yet to start any new core activities but have plans to engage junior youth and youth on the street where they live, a demographic which seems to be prevalent on this street. One effort which has come to bear fruits with the new pioneer home has been engaging three young professionals in firesides. After meeting these young men in the local park, the youth living in the pioneer house have had two dinners with these friends and have held a fireside where they studied some sections from Some Answered Questions.
