The beloved Guardian of the Faith, Shoghi Effendi, whose 36 years of devoted service shaped the development of the Bahá’í Faith and laid the foundations for its emergence as a truly worldwide community, was born in ‘Akká in 1897. Shoghi Effendi was the eldest grandson of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and the great-grandson of Bahá’u’lláh. Through his father, Mírzá Hádí, he was also related to the family of the Báb. His extraordinary heritage united two sacred family lines associated with the Twin Manifestations of God, whose Holy Births we celebrate in coming days.
In His Will and Testament, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá entrusted Shoghi Effendi with the responsibility of guiding the growing Bahá’í community and safeguarding the unity of the Faith. ‘Abdu’l‑Bahá appointed him as the “Guardian of the Cause” (Valíyy-i-Amru’lláh).
“O my loving friends! After the passing away of this wronged one, it is incumbent upon the Aghṣán (Branches), the Afnán (Twigs) of the Sacred Lote-Tree, the Hands (pillars) of the Cause of God and the loved ones of the Abhá Beauty to turn unto Shoghi Effendi—the youthful branch branched from the two hallowed and sacred Lote-Trees and the fruit grown from the union of the two offshoots of the Tree of Holiness,—as he is the sign of God, the chosen branch, the Guardian of the Cause of God, he unto whom all the Aghṣán, the Afnán, the Hands of the Cause of God and His loved ones must turn. He is the expounder of the words of God and after him will succeed the first-born of his lineal descendants.”
Only 24 years old when ‘Abdu’l-Bahá passed away in 1921, Shoghi Effendi would devote the remainder of his life to carrying forward the work begun by Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.
A legacy that continues to shape the Bahá’í world
The Guardian's contributions to the development of the Faith were immense and far-reaching. Under his guidance, the Bahá’í Administrative Order took shape, with Local and National Spiritual Assemblies established and strengthened across the world. He guided the systematic expansion of the Faith into new territories, culminating in the launch of the historic Ten-Year Crusade in 1953, which inspired Bahá’ís to arise and carry the message of Bahá’u’lláh to peoples and places throughout the globe.

His scholarly achievements were equally remarkable. Through his masterful translations of the Sacred Writings into English, his extensive correspondence, and works such as God Passes By and The World Order of Bahá’u’lláh, Shoghi Effendi provided generations of believers with a deeper understanding of the history, teachings and world-embracing vision of the Faith.
He also devoted extraordinary attention to the development and beautification of the Bahá’í Holy Places in the Holy Land, including the gardens and sacred surroundings that continue to welcome pilgrims from every corner of the world.
His ministry was characterised by tireless effort, steadfastness and a true devotion to the Covenant of Bahá’u’lláh.
An illustrious heritage and the approaching Twin Holy Birthdays
As we reflect on the Guardian's life, we are also approaching the joyous celebrations of the Twin Holy Birthdays, the Birth of the Báb from sunset on 9 November and the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh from sunset on 10 November 2026. The Guardian's own family heritage offers a particularly meaningful connection to these sacred occasions. Descended from Bahá’u’lláh through ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, and related through his paternal family to the kindred of the Báb, Shoghi Effendi occupied a unique place in the history of the Faith.
His life and ministry also remind us of the unbroken continuity of guidance established through the Covenant, by which the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh has continued to unfold and find expression in the life of humanity.
As Bahá’í communities throughout Aotearoa prepare to celebrate these two joyous Holy Days in the coming week, it is also timely to reflect with gratitude on the extraordinary spiritual heritage of Shoghi Effendi, on his selfless service to the Cause, and on our own opportunities to contribute, in this day, to the advancement of Bahá’u’lláh’s vision for humanity.
